A Bronx man was sentenced to 18 years to life in prison on Thursday for the fatal beating of an NYU lab technician inside their apartment building nearly three years ago, the Bronx District Attorney’s office said.
Bronx Supreme Court Justice Martin Marcus handed down the sentence to Junal Jordan, 43, for the February 2017 murder of Bakary Darboe, a native of Gambia.
Darboe had been on his way to medical school the night he was murdered, but had to return home to retrieve his wallet from his Melrose apartment building, cops have said.
Jordan, who was on parole at the time, pulled Darboe from the elevator on the 7th floor and fatally pummeled him, using his fists and a cellphone, authorities have said. Darboe was found dead at the scene.
Bronx Supreme Court Justice Martin Marcus told Jordan, “In my 30th year on the bench, I don’t think I’ve ever seen such an incomprehensible act.”
Jordan, last month, pleaded guilty to the murder.
Darboe’s wife, Isatoe, blasted Jordan in a victim-impact statement which was read by Assistant District Attorney Burim Namani.
“To you, Mr. Jordan, I’m still wondering why you killed my husband,” she wrote. “The pain and suffering that you caused to my family, especially my children, can never be forgiven.
“I wonder what was going through your mind while my husband was struggling to save his life,” she said.
In another victim-impact statement read by Namani, one of Darboe’s daughter’s, Mariama, described how the pain from her father’s sudden death never leave her.
“I have never experienced such pain and I have to live with this tragedy every day for the rest of my life,” she said.
Jordan, who had 20 prior arrests before killing Bakary, showed remorse for the heinous act when he addressed the court before his sentencing.
“I want to say I’m sorry to the family,” he said, “I wasn’t in my right state of mind at all.
“To the Darboe family I accept full responsibility for this.”
