Person injured after ice falls from Midtown building
Falling ice in Columbus Circle left a pedestrian with a head injury Wednesday morning, officials said.
EMS responded to a “major injury” believed to have been caused by falling ice at West 58th Street and Seventh Avenue around 9:40 a.m., the FDNY said.
The victim suffered a laceration to the head and was taken to Lenox Hill Hospital, according to police and fire officials.
The NYPD’s Midtown North Precinct tweeted that police were “responding to 911 calls for falling ice from various buildings in Midtown.”
Police said 58th Street between Seventh Avenue and Broadway was closed to both vehicle and pedestrian traffic.
A closure was also in effect on 48th Street between Park and Madison avenues in response to falling ice, the precinct tweeted.
Falling ice initially forced the entire upper level of the George Washington Bridge to close.
One lane has since reopened, but the upper level was still experiencing hour-long delays, according to multiple tweets.
