A woman and two children died on Christmas Day after apparently plunging from the roof of a parking garage in Boston.
The victims were found unconscious on a sidewalk at the base of the Renaissance Park Garage just after 1:30 p.m., and were pronounced dead at a hospital, Boston Police Commissioner William Gross told reporters.
Investigators were seen huddling around a black SUV left parked on the rooftop with three of its doors open. The area around the vehicle was cordoned off with yellow crime-scene tape.
But when asked during the press conference whether the victims dove to their deaths, Gross said: “I have no way of knowing that and we definitely won’t jump to conclusions or try to speculate.”
The victims’ vehicle was found in the garage with one car seat facing forward and one backward, Suffolk County District Attorney Rachael Rollins said.
Authorities didn’t immediately identify the woman or the two kids, who were believed to be “5 and under,” according to Gross. They also didn’t specify what the relationship was between the three.
“This is a tragedy,” Gross said.
Both Gross and Rollins said the incident seemed all the more grim because it involved two small children on Christmas Day.
“As a mother, it was incredibly hard, this scene in particular, where there were two young children who lost their lives today,” Rollins said.
“On Christmas and the holiday season where many people are celebrating, it can be a challenging and difficult time,” she added.
“I feel it imperative that we let people know that there is help.”
The medical examiner will determine the cause of death. An investigation is ongoing.
