Jerry Jones hints at Cowboys ‘changes’ as Jason Garrett awaits his fate

Though Jerry Jones said Sunday “there’s no door shut here tonight” after an embattled Jason Garrett coached the Cowboys to a 47-16 victory over the Redskins, the owner did disclose changes could be coming to Dallas.

“When you work for yourself, you have to evaluate and change what you’re doing. You don’t fire yourself, so you look at what you can do better, and you go do it better if you can,” the Cowboys owner said, according to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. “I make changes, and I certainly can see myself making changes in a lot of areas.”

Despite Sunday’s thrashing over an NFC East rival, the 8-8 Cowboys were eliminated from the playoffs with the Eagles’ win over the Giants. And while Jones didn’t have “any comments or thoughts to share with anybody about any pending decisions as to coaches, players or anything within the organization” following the win, it’s long been speculated Garrett’s days in Dallas are over.

“We certainly would’ve liked to have that game back in Philadelphia, but we didn’t. These are the consequences. You can’t have some of the missteps or the losses that we had throughout the year and not ultimately pay the fiddler,” Jones said of last week’s numbing defeat. “That’s exactly what happened tonight.”

Jones did not indicate any timeline for the decision on Garrett’s future. However, NFL Network reported that Garrett’s contract expires on Jan. 14 and the team could simply let his contract run out as opposed to firing him.

“I want to be the coach of the Dallas Cowboys,” Garrett said on Sunday. “We will see what happens.”
