“Affluenza teen” Ethan Couch is back behind bars for parole violation Thursday because he allegedly tested positive for the active ingredient in marijuana, court records show.
Couch, 22, was booked into Tarrant County Jail in Fort Worth, Texas, after he was allegedly busted with THC in his system, according to the documents.
In June 2013, a then-16-year-old Couch shot to infamy after he killed four people and injured nine others while driving drunk and under the influence of marijuana and prescription drugs on a rural road outside Dallas.
The victims had stopped on the road to help a disabled driver when they were struck.
The then-teen’s attorney’s invoked the notorious “affluence” defense at his trial — with a psychologist testifying that Couch was so spoiled by his parents that he was incapable of distinguishing right from wrong.
A juvenile court sentenced him to 10 years of probation. Couch was also forced to enter an alcohol and drug rehabilitation program.
The sentence, which allowed him to avoid serving time behind bars, was roundly condemned by the victims’ families.
Two years later, when he was found to have violated the terms of his probation by drinking alcohol at a party, he fled with his mother to a resort in Mexico.
The mother and son were extradited to the US in 2016, where Couch was sent to the slammer for two years then freed in 2018.
