Boy fatally struck by NYC Department of Sanitation truck in Queens
A 10-year-old boy was killed after he and his mother were struck by a city Department of Sanitation truck early Tuesday morning in Queens, police said.
The 40-year-old woman and her son were walking down 57th Avenue near 97th Street in Corona around 7 a.m. when the DSNY truck slammed into them, cops said.
The truck had just pulled out of a driveway and was attempting to turn right on 57th Avenue at the time.
The mom was left in critical condition, while her son died in the hospital hours after the accident, police said.
The Post is withholding their names because acquaintances and authorities said she has not been told that her son was killed.
“He was very intelligent,” family friend Jaget Chhetri said of the boy outside NYC Health + Hospitals/Elmhurst, where more than 20 friends and relatives had gathered Tuesday afternoon.
“Nice boy, his education was very good,” Chhetri said. “He was so pampered by his parents because he was the youngest.”
He said the boy’s mom was doing “OK” after suffering a serious leg injury.
“The doctors are working on her,” he said. “It’s not been amputated. They might have to put some blade or rod inside. She has to have surgery today.”
Yam Aryal, the boy’s uncle, said the family was part of a large Nepalese community that gathered in solidarity after the tragedy.
“We are all one family,” he said. “Everybody wants to get together in this situation. We are all together to support her.”
It’s not immediately clear if charges will be filed against the truck driver, who remained on scene after the accident.
