Alex Georgiev is only making Rangers’ goalie dilemma tougher

After this, Rangers coach David Quinn said he and his staff had planned to “sit down and figure out what the next step is” considering their goaltending trifecta. He also said “it is tempting” to go back to Alex Georgiev.

And so spins the Blueshirts netminding carousel, as Georgiev made 32 saves en route to his team’s 6-2 win over the Islanders on Monday night at the Garden.

“He made some key saves when we needed him,” Quinn said.

It got crowded in the crease when the Rangers called up highly touted Russian prospect Igor Shesterkin a week ago, the 24-year-old winning two straight starts to begin his NHL career. But he was a healthy scratch for the past two, as Henrik Lundqvist lost in St. Louis on Saturday before Georgiev got this start, his first since Jan. 4.

“It’s not an ideal situation, as we’ve all talked about,” Quinn said. “We wanted to get Hank and Georgie a game after Igor had his two starts, and then we can really sit down and figure out what the next step is.”

Georgiev was adamant that he doesn’t feel any more pressure to succeed in this situation, but he did admit it felt good to continue his dominance over the Islanders, having won two of three games against them last season while stopping 58 of 60 shots.

“It feels really good,” Georgiev said. “Obviously the team helped me a lot today. We got the lead and we played good defense. I just had to do my job.”

Quinn made a point to say that two first-period fights helped his team — the first a heavyweight bout between Micheal Haley and Ross Johnston, the second between Brendan Smith and Matt Martin that got both kicked out of the game because the linesman didn’t drop the puck on the faceoff and so their fight happened before play restarted.

“I think for us, it may have had an effect,” said Quinn, whose team was down 1-0 just 18 seconds into the game but dominated after the fights.

There was also a melee late in the third period between Johnston and Tony DeAngelo, as well as Chris Kreider dragging around Brock Nelson by the jersey. That surely will be on both teams’ minds when they reconvene at the Coliseum on Thursday night.

“Anytime you play three games in a week, there are going emotions that carry over,” Quinn said. “But that being said, we have to play hockey.”

Pavel Buchnevich was a game-time decision with the flu, but was able to play. … Marc Staal returned after missing Saturday’s game with an upper-body injury, bumping Libor Hajek from the lineup. … Winger Philip Di Giuseppe, recalled from AHL Hartford on Sunday, was a scratch.
