Forget about security detail — New York City’s next mayor could be carrying his own gun.
Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams, a former cop, said Thursday that he’d pack heat if elected mayor in 2021 rather than waste taxpayer money by having his own security detail like Mayor Bill de Blasio and his predecessors.
“Yes I will, number one,” Adams told the FAQ NYC podcast when asked if he’d pack a firearm as mayor.
“And number two, I won’t have a security detail. If the city is safe, the mayor shouldn’t have a security detail with him. He should be walking the street by himself.”
De Blasio’s security detail is provided by a dedicated unit of the NYPD that accompanies the mayor virtually everywhere — even when he travels overseas. The NYPD has repeatedly refused to reveal how much taxpayers are spending for city police to protect Hizzoner and his family.
Adams also defended remarks he made last October encouraging off-duty cops to carry a gun to houses of worship in the wake of the horrific synagogue shooting in Pittsburgh.
“If we have police officers standing in front of churches, then we can’t say it’s wrong for a police officer who’s off duty to be inside churches with a gun,” Adams said at the time. “If they’re leaving those firearms home, I now say to them: Stop leaving your firearm home. Do as I do. Bring your firearm to church.”
The beep, however, said he wasn’t packing a gun during the podcast, insisting “I rarely carry.”
