UK wants to ban new gas-powered car sales by 2035

The UK is giving gas-guzzlers the bum’s rush.

British officials plan to end sales of new gas-powered cars in 15 years in an effort to combat climate change and cut emissions.

The ban on selling new diesel, gasoline and hybrid vehicles will start in 2035 — five years earlier than planned — or sooner if it’s feasible, UK officials said Tuesday. The measure is subject to consultation, according to officials.

“There can be no greater responsibility than protecting our planet, and no mission that a Global Britain is prouder to serve,” Prime Minister Boris Johnson said in a statement.

Johnson’s government announced the move as he launched the UN climate change summit known as COP26. The two-week conference is slated to take place this November in Glasgow, Scotland.

The UK is just the latest European government to crack down on gas-powered cars as world leaders work to tackle the climate crisis. France is looking to ban sales of fossil fuel-powered vehicles by 2040, and Paris, Madrid, Athens and Mexico City aim to bar diesel cars from their city centers by 2025.

Gas and diesel vehicles still make up 90 percent of sales in Britain, though demand for electric cars has grown. The country’s three best-selling electric cars are made by Tesla, Mitsubishi and BMW.

Johnson’s government has launched a 1.5 billion-pound effort to make owning electric vehicles easier, according to UK transport secretary Grant Shapps, who said a fully electric car was sold every 15 minutes last year.

“We want to go further than ever before,” Shapps said in a statement.
