Everyone gets caught with food in their teeth now and again. Unfortunately for Nick Jonas, the stakes are a bit higher.
During last month’s Grammy Awards, the 27-year-old pop star was dragged on social media after being caught with spinach in his teeth — a k a “spinachgate” — while performing the Jonas Brothers’ hit “What a Man Gotta Do” and new single “Five More Minutes.”
But it seems Mr. Priyanka Chopra is laughing it off.
“What I’m baffled by is that I had only eaten one thing hours before the performance,” said Nick during an interview for Capital FM with brothers Joe, 30, and Kevin, 32.
“I had what I have every day for breakfast: egg white omelet, spinach, mushrooms, little bit of feta cheese,” Nick explained, adding that he’s no stranger to a green tooth “from time to time.”
Then, his brother Kevin revealed a detail to this saga that can only reasonably be described as a familial betrayal.
“We haven’t talked about this,” Kevin said to Nick. “Right before the performance, I did, like, a teeth check with Joe and Joe did one with me. I have not said this to you and I forgot to mention it.”
Joe then accused Kevin of “throwing [him] under the bus.”
The gracious Nick seemed at peace with the gaffe, calling it “funny” and “a little embarrassing” and noting that it’s not his brothers’ “responsibility” to make sure he’s brushed his teeth before a show. (It is, however, totally on them for having not mentioned Nick’s cruddy tooth all day.)
“You can be having the best year of your career, at the top of your game, performing on the Grammys as a nominee, and still have spinach in your teeth,” Nick said. “So, God has an amazing way of humbling you.”
The Jonas Brothers had been nominated for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance for their song “Sucker.”
