Dershowitz: Nancy Pelosi, Chuck Schumer ‘have to go’ if Democrats want to regain power

Alan Dershowitz, the Harvard law professor who was part of President Trump’s legal team during the Senate impeachment trial, said the top Democratic leaders in Congress “have to go” if the party wants to regain power.

“I think they need new leadership. I think Schumer and Pelosi have to go. Schumer, because of his history of lying. You know, Pelosi actually called for me to be disbarred … because I had persuaded some senators” in the Senate trial, he said, referring to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer.

“I think the Dems need new leaders if they have any chance of returning to power,” Dershowitz said in an interview that aired Sunday morning on “The Cats Roundtable” with radio host John Catsimatidis on AM 970.

The Republican-majority Senate voted last Wednesday to acquit Trump on two articles of impeachment — abuse of power and obstruction of Congress.

During the Senate trial, Dershowitz argued that if the president takes an action to get him re-elected, something he believes is in the nation’s interest, he cannot be impeached for it.

Pelosi slammed Dershowitz and the other lawyers on the White House defense team for violating the Constitution with the argument.

“I don’t know how they can retain their lawyer status, in the comments that they’re making,” Pelosi told reporters at the Capitol last month.

But Dershowitz said last week was good for the Constitution and bad for Democrats.

“This week was a good week for the United States Constitution. The Constitution won,” he said. “I think the House of Representatives disgraced itself by its partisan vote. And I think the Senate did the right thing by protecting the Constitution. I’m proud of America. The system works.”

The Democrat-controlled House on Dec. 19 voted 230-197 on the abuse of power charge and 229-198 on the congressional obstruction charge.

The Senate rejected the abuse of power article 48-52 — with Sen. Mitt Romney (R-Utah) voting along with the Democrats — and defeated the obstruction charge 47-53.
