The 2020 Oscars are officially going host-free — but that hasn’t stopped the most recent Golden Globes emcee from weighing in on the big day.
While A-listers strutted their stuff on the red carpet, Ricky Gervais took to Twitter for a little impromptu monologue.
As the ceremony was gearing up Sunday at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, the divisive comedian shared what could’ve been during ABC’s live telecast.
When a user of the social media platform asked the acid-tongued Gervais what his “first best joke” would be if he were hosting, the actor-writer didn’t hold back.
“I can’t wait to hear all your inspirational speeches about equality,” he wrote, “and it’s great that the 3 hours you’re here tonight is the only time your badly paid migrant house staff will get some time off to sleep this week.”
He followed that with another zing against Hollywood’s elite.
“It’s great to see such diversity in the room tonight,” he wrote. “Rich sex pests of all shapes and sizes.”
Oscar producers can breathe a sigh of relief that they won’t have to contend with controversial jokes like that, as they’ve chosen to forgo a host for the ceremony for the second year in a row.
Comedian Kevin Hart was announced as the host for the 2019 show, but he ended up resigning after an uproar over some of his old homophobic tweets. The academy opted not to replace him.
In the event Gervais doesn’t live tweet throughout the entire Oscars broadcast, this year’s list of presenters includes plenty of big names who could still serve up laughs. Chris Rock, Josh Gad, James Corden, Steve Martin, Will Ferrell, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Maya Rudolph and Rebel Wilson are among the stars who will take the stage.
