Car crash off cliff on scenic California coastal highway leaves 2 dead
A rented Camaro swerved off a cliff on a breathtaking California coastal highway Tuesday and burst into flames, killing two people inside, according to a report.
Police are scrambling to identify the tragic pair, who plunged 300 feet off the Pacific Coast Highway near Big Sur at around 3 a.m., according to ksbw.com.
Fire crews first received a call from a driver reporting an acre-long brush fire in the area — and later discovered the flame-engulfed 2018 Chevrolet Camaro roughly 300 feet from the roadway, fire chief Matt Harris, told the local station.
Officials put out the blaze and rescuers recovered two charred bodies inside the car. The cause of the accident wasn’t immediately known Wednesday.
The twisty ocean-side highway, also known as California 1, is among the nation’s most “exhilarating” road trip routes, according to National Geographic.
