With Mike Francesa’s radio time reduced, his Twitter account might be the best way for him to try to stay relevant.
He made an attempt to stir the pot early Wednesday morning, alluding to potential discord between Gerrit Cole, the Yankees’ new $324 million ace, and Cole’s new teammates in the wake of the Astros cheating scandal. Gleyber Torres said this week he thinks the Astros were still cheating in 2019. Cole was not on the 2017 World Series-winning Astros, but he was on the team the last two seasons. The Astros were found by MLB to have illegally stole signs in 2017 and parts of the 2018 season.
“If the Yanks can’t tolerate Astros’ cheating, and believe Astros cheated in 2019, how do they play behind Cole this season?” wrote Francesa, who now only does a half-hour on WFAN along with steaming time on Radio.com. That followed Francesa saying, “Yanks need to forget about Astros and realize they haven’t been special in post-season in a long time. It takes “special” to win the World Series.”
Cole was asked by The Post Tuesday about Torres’ comments.
“He is entitled to his opinion. It’s an emotional subject for everybody,” Cole said. “I’ll just say what I said before, that I didn’t see anything and as far as my perspective we were clean.”
Cole said he would “maybe” speak with Torres about the issue “if it comes up organically.”
If Cole is as dominant for the Yankees as he was last season, his teammates probably will play behind him just fine.
