NICU nurse reunited with old patient when caring for his son

A NICU nurse in New Jersey was reunited with a patient she cared for over three decades ago in the same hospital — where she is now caring for his son.

After David Caldwell and his fiancé Renata Freydin’s son, Zayne, was born on Jan. 30, the couple decided to look through Caldwell’s own baby photos. Little did they know they could come across a familiar face.

”I got the baby book out because wanted to compare photos of me and Zayne as babies and in the NICU,” Caldwell, now 33 and a professional wedding photographer, told “Good Morning America.”

The photo showed him being held by his mom’s favorite nurse in the NICU, and Freydin immediately recognized her as one of the nurses who had been taking care of Zayne, who was born 10 weeks early and weighed just three pounds.

The couple brought the picture to the hospital where they confirmed it was Lissa McGowan.

Both McGowan and Caldwell — who decided to do an adorable recreation of the photo with baby Zayne — were shocked by their connection.

”It’s kind of unusual having your preemie come back after 34 years … but to have a dad come in and be the dad of a preemie is a whole other story,” McGowan told GMA.

Freydin says Zayne is doing “amazing,” now weighing slightly over four pounds. The three-week-old is already a hit on social media, with over 24,000 shares on his mom’s Facebook post.

“The past 2 weeks have been filled with worries and uncertainty but we can breathe easy knowing my lil nuggets nurse is the same one that helped the man I love when he was in the same situation,” she wrote.
