Ryan Murphy’s next juicy show has a premiere date: May 1, 2020.
Titled “Hollywood,” the Netflix series will be a limited seven-episode saga — a period piece in post-World War II Hollywood, following aspiring filmmakers and actors as they try to make it big.
Darren Criss, who last teamed up with Murphy in his Emmy- and Golden Globe-winning role in the 2018 FX limited series “American Crime Story: The Assassination of Gianni Versace,” will star.
The show’s logline, as put out by Netflix, describes the plot: “Each character offers a unique glimpse behind the gilded curtain of Hollywood’s Golden Age, spotlighting the unfair systems and biases across race, gender and sexuality that continue to this day. Provocative and incisive, ‘Hollywood’ exposes and examines decades-old power dynamics, and what the entertainment landscape might look like if they had been dismantled.”
Since this is Murphy, viewers likely can expect murder, snarky one-liners and camp.
Surprisingly, Murphy darling Emma Roberts isn’t co-starring. Joining Criss will be Jim Parsons, Holland Taylor, Patti LuPone, Jeremy Pope, Samara Weaving, “American Horror Story” favorite Dylan McDermott and David Corenswet — a relative newcomer who burst onto the scene in Murphy’s previous Netflix project, “The Politician.”
Ian Brennan, who worked with Murphy on “Glee” and campy-gory “Scream Queens,” co-created the program, which is Murphy’s first original series under a deal with Netflix.
