Strong winds send Brooklyn scaffolding careening into construction workers
Three construction workers were injured after scaffolding collapsed in Brooklyn Thursday — as winds gusted around 25 miles per hour, authorities said.
The workers were “adjusting and dismantling sections of the scaffold” on the roof of 535 Grand Street in Williamsburg at 2:36 p.m. when it collapsed, according to NYC’s Department of Buildings.
The “major” construction site was converting the three-story structure into a six-floor apartment building, a spokesperson for the DOB said.
EMS transported the men to Bellevue Hospital Center with minor injuries, authorities said.
Video posted to Citizen shows the scaffold completely buckled over with firemen attempting to shore up the building.
Department of Buildings inspectors were investigating the collapse and no citations had been issued.
There was a partial stop-work order issued in November 2019 for unsafe conditions after the construction crew allegedly built new scaffolding onto the roof of the neighboring building. The issue was ultimately resolved, records show.
Residents have lodged multiple complaints about the scaffolding with the city, city records show.
