Arizona State punter Michael Turk steals show at NFL Combine

A punter stole the show during Thursday’s NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis.

NFL teams may only care about the strength of Michael Turk’s leg, but it was his bench-pressing prowess that turned heads.

The Arizona State punter — who is the nephew of former NFL punter Matt Turk, who played 17 years in the league — banged out a record 25 reps of 225 pounds in bench-press testing.

According to NFL.com, it set a modern record for most reps by a punter since 2003, per NFL Research. Tennessee’s Trevor Daniel, who has punted for the Houston Texans the past two season, held the previous best mark for a punter with 23 reps in 2018.

Turk also outperformed 19 offensive linemen, including top prospects such as Iowa’s Tristan Wirfs (24) and Louisville’s Mekhi Becton (23), a possible Giants target.

According to ESPN.com, Turk’s numbers were better than many current NFL stars. His 25 reps were more than Frank Clark (19 in 2015), Jadeveon Clowney (21 in 2014), DeMarcus Lawrence (20 in 2014), Devin White (22 in 2019), Chandler Jones (22 in 2012) and Michael Bennett (24 in 2009).

But it still will be Turk’s right leg that will get him into the NFL. Turk, who played for Lafayette College in 2017, averaged 46 yards per punt for Arizona State, including a whopping long of 75 yards, and had 23 punts of 50-plus yards. He decided to enter the NFL draft after just one season as a starter with the Sun Devils, forgoing two years of eligibility.

In other Combine testing news, Henry Ruggs III came up short in his quest to set a record, but still clocked the fastest 40-yard dash.

The 5-foot-11, 188-pound speedster from Alabama clocked an impressive 4.27 seconds, short of the 4.22-second record that Bengals wide receiver John Ross set during a blazing 2017 run.
