Diamond Princess passenger is reportedly first Brit to die of coronavirus
A man who became infected on board the coronavirus-ravaged Diamond Princess cruise ship became the first British citizen to die from the deadly bug, according to a new report.
The British man’s death brings the total number of passengers who died after their time on board the long-quarantined ship to six, Metro UK reported, citing the Japanese Ministry of Health.
The man has yet to be identified and the UK’s Foreign and Commonwealth Office is looking into the report, the outlet reported.
He was one of four UK residents who needed to remain in Japan after dozens more, who had tested negative for coronavirus, returned to the UK this week.
The cruise liner was carrying 3,700 people, including 78 from the UK, when it was quarantined, Metro reported.
The fifth cruise passenger to succumb to the virus was a woman in her 70s from Tokyo, the Daily Mail reported. She was diagnosed on the ship on Feb. 6 and taken to the hospital the following day.
The woman — who also suffered from diabetes and high blood pressure — became increasingly ill Feb. 19 and she was declared dead on Friday, according to the report.
Four other passengers from the ship — all of whom were in their 80s — died from the virus that has infected nearly 700 guests and crew members.
The 3,700-passenger cruise was placed on lockdown off the coast of Yokohama after a passenger disembarked in Hong Kong and tested positive for the virus.
Before the quarantine on the ship had officially ended, the United States evacuated more than 300 Americans and put them in quarantine in the US for another 14 days.
South Korea, Australia and Hong Kong followed suit, while Canada and Italy sent flights for their citizens as well.
