Garth Brooks was burned by fans who thought he was feeling the Bern.
The country star ignited a firestorm for wearing a Barry Sanders jersey at his concert in Detroit — as some confused the former Lions running back for the White House hopeful from Vermont.
“Good grief. Can’t you just do what you get paid to do ????” one Instagram user wrote in response to the image Brooks posted of himself wearing the No. 20 jersey at Ford Field, home of the Detroit Lions, on Saturday night.
Clearly, user jenjensoccermomma thought Brooks was singing the praises of Sen. Bernie Sanders, the self-described Democratic socialist who is the front-runner in the Democratic presidential race.
“Why why why does it have to involve politics !!! So sad. We don’t pay good money for anything other than to watch you perform. 😡Thought you were different,” the user wrote.
“If this is for Bernie Sanders, I’m done with you,” another user wrote. “I thought you were a true American that loves Our Country?”
“Lost some respect w that jersey,” added another person.
Others were well aware of who Barry Sanders is.
“Facebook forgot who Barry Sanders is and is freaking out at Garth Brooks for wearing a jersey and I’m dying,” @jasoncvincent tweeted.
“These people should not be able to vote. We take voting privileges from felons. These idiots should not have the privilege either,” wrote @Geoff_Litwin.
And @surfbkd said: “Not a big Garth Brooks fan, but it’s hilarious that people are apparently mad he wore a Detroit Lions Jersey at his Detroit show.
“I didn’t realize BARRY Sanders was such a divisive person lol. Maybe they’re Packer fans…”
For the record, Brooks confirmed during the show that he was paying tribute to the retired Hall of Famer, according to The Blaze.
“Can I just tell ya, you guys got the greatest player in NFL history, in my opinion,” he told his audience of 70,000 fans.
