Islanders fall to Blues in OT after blowing lead in final minutes

ST. LOUIS — The Islanders could regret letting the extra point slip away.

Colton Parayko scored on an unassisted wraparound at 3:23 of overtime, sending the Blues to their sixth consecutive victory with a 3-2 win over the Islanders on Thursday night.

“I don’t really get that close to the net all the time,” Parayko said. “I saw the opportunity I guess and just tried to wrap it.”

Jean-Gabriel Pageau got his second goal in two games since being acquired from Ottawa and Jordan Eberle also scored for the Islanders, who are a point behind the third-place Flyers in the Metropolitan Division and hold a slim lead for the top Eastern Conference wild card.

Thomas Greiss stopped 30 shots for the Islanders, who led 2-1 after the first period.

Vince Dunn tied it for St. Louis with 1:44 left in the third period. Brayden Schenn also scored for the defending Stanley Cup champions.

“I think we got on our heels a bit,” Eberle said. “We lost some battles and they’re a good team. I guess you can say you got a point, but this late in the season you want to try and get two. You take the one, but some things to correct, obviously.”

The Islanders were outshot 23-5 after the first period.

“It’s disappointing we didn’t get two [points], but we got one and every point is going to matter here,” Islanders coach Barry Trotz said. “We’ll see at the end of the whole process if this is the one that got away or if this is the one that got us in. The Blues have been pretty good in this building.”

Blues defenseman Jay Bouwmeester, 36, who had a cardiac episode on the bench Feb. 11 in Anaheim and will miss the rest of the season and playoffs, got a standing ovation in the first period.

Islanders defenseman Andy Green (back) was scratched. He left Tuesday’s game against the Rangers in the first period after a collision with Brendan Lemieux and is day to day. … The game marked the road portion of the dads’ trip for the Islanders, which also included the home game against the Rangers. Eighteen players either had their father or a male mentor traveling with the team.
