Trump mocks Jeff Sessions after he’s forced into runoff for former Senate seat

President Trump on Wednesday relished his former Attorney General Jeff Sessions being forced into a runoff election for his former Senate seat in Alabama.

“This is what happens to someone who loyally gets appointed Attorney General of the United States & then doesn’t have the wisdom or courage to stare down & end the phony Russia Witch Hunt. Recuses himself on FIRST DAY in office, and the Mueller Scam begins!,” the president wrote on Twitter.

Sessions, who held the seat for 20 years before vacating it to become Trump’s attorney general, will have to face off against former Auburn University football coach Tommy Tuberville in a March 31 runoff election.

Neither Republican candidate got more than 50 percent of the vote in Tuesday’s election.

Trump has never tried to hide his anger with Sessions since he recused himself from the Russia collusion investigation, leading to the appointment of special counsel Robert Mueller.

Sessions, who resigned in November 2018 at the president’s urging, reminded voters on the campaign trail that he was the first sitting senator to endorse Trump’s candidacy.

And he highlighted his relationship with Trump at a post-election speech Tuesday.

“Anyone can say they are for the Trump agenda, but talk is cheap, but I have fought on the great issues of our day and won,” Session told a cheering crowd. “We have this opportunity to turn the Trump agenda into reality, and I am the man for that job.”

The winner of the runoff will face Democratic Sen. Doug Jones.

Jones won the seat in 2017 by defeating Roy Moore, who was accused by multiple women of sexually assaulting them when they were teenagers.
