New York coronavirus totals near 1,000 as deaths rise
ALBANY — There are now 950 confirmed coronavirus cases in New York state — along with a total of seven deaths, Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced Monday, citing new totals from the state Health Department.
There are 221 new cases statewide since Sunday, with 463 total cases in New York City, a jump of 134 from the day prior.
There are now 220 cases in Westchester County, 109 in Nassau County, 63 in Suffolk County, 16 in Rockland County and 12 in Albany County. Of the 950, 158 cases have been admitted to hospitals.
The state has tested roughly 7,000 people, Cuomo said.
New drive-through testing sites will be set up in Staten Island and Rockland County, following an announcement Sunday that Long Island will also get its own facility.
The Westchester County city of New Rochelle, known for having the highest cluster of cases in the country, already has its own site.
Cuomo also blamed the federal government’s failure to institute nationwide disease guidance.
“You see a whole hodgepodge of efforts being taken across the country,” the third-term Democratic governor told press in Albany, following the announcement of a regional proposal among New York, New Jersey and Connecticut to shut down all bars and restaurants — except for takeout and delivery — starting at 8 p.m. Monday.
All gyms, movie theaters and casinos will be closed until further notice.
Only facilities deemed “essential” will remain open, including grocery stores, gas stations, pharmacies and medical facilities.
“The density may shift temporarily, but it’s the same problem: Let the federal government say these are the guidances … rather than have a scramble of every local government, state government trying to figure it out on its own,” Cuomo added.
He also said all state and local park fees across the state will be waived, the State Liquor Authority is issuing new regulations for bars and restaurants to sell products off premises, all local governments must reduce their workforce by 50 percent and all local police and EMS workers must wear face masks.
Following Sunday’s announcement that downstate schools will be closed, Cuomo added New York City, Nassau, Suffolk, Westchester and Rockland counties must have educational and meal programs in place by midnight and approved by the state.
Cuomo is also planning closing all schools across the state but needs to go over details with the state Education Department. That’s after Mayor Bill de Blasio ordered city schools closed on Sunday.
