Even fare evaders are being sanitary amid coronavirus crisis
Hey, no fare!
A viral video shows a straphanger in protective gear sanitizing a subway turnstile MetroCard reader — before jumping over the gate to avoid the fare anyway.
“You don’t get any more new york than this,” photographer and self-described weather geek Nicholas Colabella wrote on Facebook, where he posted the video on Saturday.
It was not clear where the footage was taken — or whether the man was actually a fare evader intent on maintaining proper hygienic practices during the coronavirus crisis, or just a prankster.
The man, dressed in a hoodie with a face mask on his forehead, is seen putting on a pair of gloves and pulling out a spray bottle from a pocket, disinfecting both sides of the entrance — and then leaping over the turnstile.
The video on Colabella’s page has garnered more than 1.2 million views and about 43,000 shares.
“Socially conscious thievery,” Kwende Idrissa Madu wrote on Facebook.
Christine Tsao posted: “LMFAO I knew that’s what he was going to do! There’s literally no one in the subways to catch him.”
“Every New Yorker sent me this LOL. He better watch out someone wants his lysol,” said Robyn Albohn.
Karina Gab Alexandra said the man was “being cautious health wise while saying screw you to the authorities.”
Colabella could not be immediately reached for comment.
