Coronavirus in NY: New Rochelle schools boss gave students laptops before testing positive
The New Rochelle schools superintendent who tested positive for COVID-19 distributed laptops to students shortly before she started feeling ill, she said Saturday.
Laura Feijoo said she visited three schools and distributed Chromebooks on March 11. That was also the day she decided to close New Rochelle schools, after resisting the move despite a coronavirus epidemic in the Westchester County city.
“I did go out and hand laptops to students on Wednesday, but I did not develop symptoms until sometime on Thursday,” Feijoo said in a videotaped news conference from her home.
“I wasn’t close to anyone, but I don’t know if I was six to 10 feet away from every person, the way it’s now recommended.”
Dozens of students and staff who came into contact with Feijoo that day, along with various city officials, have had to self-quarantine from March 12 to March 26. Only those who develop symptoms will be tested.
Feijoo said she experienced chills, body and joint aches, eye pain, periodic coughing and some shortness of breath.
“I think my symptoms have been pretty mild,” she said, adding that she was surprised by the diagnosis Saturday because she did not have a fever.
Two New Rochelle staff members and a student at the schools tested positive for COVID-19 soon after schools closed.
New Rochelle is New York’s coronavirus epicenter, traced to a 50-year-old Manhattan lawyer who attended a funeral, bar mitzvah and religious services in town. The rapid spread of COVID-19 prompted Gov. Andrew Como to institute a mile-radius coronavirus “containment zone” around the family’s synagogue.
Feijoo, who was hired in New Rochelle last June, stirred controversy when residents learned she was one of three women who sued NYC Schools Chancellor Richard Carranza last June. Feijoo claimed she was stripped of responsibilities and pushed aside because she is white. The school board refused demands that she be let go. She started the job in November. The NYC suit is pending.
