The Dutch military will take patients in areas with overwhelmed medical systems to less-crowded hospitals in the Netherlands, according to a new report.
The logistics specialists will be sent out Saturday to assist with the transfers between intensive care units, Defense Minister Ank Bijleveld tweeted.
The Netherlands has confirmed 3,000 cases and 106 deaths.
Officials in one of the hardest-hit regions, Brabant in the southern Netherlands, have said its medical facilities are already becoming overwhelmed.
“Hospitals in Brabant can’t handle on their own the stream of patients we expect in the short term,” Amphia Hospital doctor Jan Kluytmans told NOS TV.
Officials in New York are also calling for military assistance to help fight the coronavirus.
Already, a Navy medical ship has been sent to dock in New York City.
Earlier in the week, Defense Secretary Mark Esper pledged to also deploy the Army Corps of Engineers.
