A kickboxing match in Thailand led to a spike in Coronavirus infections.
At least 104 people left the Bangkok’s Lumpini Stadium infected with coronavirus after a major Muay Thai match there on March 6. The spike significantly complicated the country’s ability to stamp out the pandemic easily.
The Muay Thai match infections make up more than a quarter of the 411 known cases in the country.
“The more people who report themselves, the easier it is for us to track down others with the virus before it’s too late.” said Dr. Thaveesin Visanuyothin, a spokesman for the Public Health Ministry.
A second mini-outbreak in the country was traced back to a group of millennials at an upscale party at a Bangkok nightclub with a visitor from Hong Kong. The groups earned a reprimand by Thai authorities for sharing drinks and cigarettes.
Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha has closed schools, and major gathering spaces, but has insisted the country will avoid a total lockdown.
