The Ottawa Senators announced Saturday that a second player had tested positive for the coronavirus.
The unidentified player is the latest member of the Senators to contract the virus following the team’s recent road trip to the West Coast — which included games in Los Angeles, Anaheim and San Jose. Ottawa is the only NHL team to reveal a player has tested positive for COVID-19.
A day after the NHL season was suspended on March 12, the Senators were told by their medical team that everyone who took part in the road trip — including players, staff, media, guests and flight crew should self-quarantine. The team also said eight people have been tested and 44 showed no symptoms, but they are awaiting the results from tests that have taken place in the last three days.
“The Ottawa Senators’ medical team is actively monitoring players and staff and following all appropriate and professional guidelines to help ensure the health and safety of our employees and the greater community,” a statement from the team read.
“To be fully transparent with our fans and stakeholders, we will continue to provide periodic updates as appropriate, while maintaining the privacy of the individuals impacted.”
On Tuesday, the Senators revealed the first player who tested positive had mild symptoms and is in isolation. The Ducks and Kings, who were the last teams to take on the Senators, have said no players reported or displayed symptoms of the virus and are currently in self-isolation.
