One of New York’s biggest Catholic charities, the Mother Cabrini Health Foundation, announced Tuesday it will donate $50 million to hospitals and nonprofits battling the coronavirus pandemic across the Empire State.
“We are honored to support such a wide range of organizations doing critically important work to improve the lives of New York’s most vulnerable communities,” said Alfred Kelly, Jr., Visa’s chief executive, who chairs the foundation’s board.
The foundation is set to distribute the aid through grants to hospitals and other healthcare providers, community nonprofits and Catholic Charities affiliates, which serve all faiths.
No recipients have been named yet, but officials at the nonprofit say they are sending out applications Tuesday and hope to begin awarding the grants in the next two weeks.
“From supporting pediatric cardiac care units in children’s hospitals to expanding mental health services to enhancing immigrants’ access to services, our inaugural grants are already making a difference in communities across New York State,” said Msgr. Gregory Mustaciuolo, the foundation’s chief executive.
The $3.2 billion foundation was established in 2018 after the state’s Catholic bishops sold their nonprofit healthcare insurer to Centene.
