The US topped 500,000 confirmed coronavirus cases Saturday morning.
The deadly virus has infected at least 501,615, according to Johns Hopkins University.
That’s far more than any other country. Spain has the second-most cases with 158,273.
At least 18,777 people have died in the nation, including more than 2,000 on Friday, the deadliest day of the pandemic in any country. The US is second only to Italy, which has reported 18,849 deaths.
New York remains the epicenter of the outbreak in the United States, with 94,409 confirmed cases and 5,429 confirmed deaths as of Friday evening. That number is surely an undercount, with some estimates suggesting as many as 2,400 at-home deaths haven’t been included in the total.
New York’s first case was reported on March 1.
Worldwide, more than 1.7 million people have been infected by the virus, a remarkable spread of the virus since it was identified in late December in China. COVID-19, the disease that the virus causes, has killed at least 103,257 people.
