Alvin Kamara’s priceless livestream reaction to Christian McCaffrey’s $64 million deal

It’s blockbuster contract season.

Alvin Kamara’s remote “Call of Duty” game was interrupted on Monday by $64 million worth of breaking news.

“Ooh, wait. Pause, pause, pause,” Kamara shouted to the other three players in the game. “Carolina’s Christian McCaffrey has signed a four-year extension, $16 million a year.”

The deal makes the 23-year-old McCaffrey the highest-paid running back in the NFL — for now. The contract raises the bar for the next elite running back, which could very well be Kamara.

“Hey man, look. I just play football, I’m just a football guy,” the 24-year-old Tennessee product joked demurely when asked what the market-changing figure means for him. “I don’t know nothing about contracts and all these things and all this money.”

The pair may have similar strengths as pass-catching running backs, but McCaffrey stands out for total offensive production. The 2017 first-round pick from Stanford had 287 rushes for 1,387 yards and 15 touchdowns, as well as 116 catches on 142 targets for 1,005 receiving yards and four touchdowns last season.

Kamara, who was selected in the third round of the 2017 NFL Draft, tallied 171 rushes for 797 yards and five touchdowns in addition to 81 receptions on 97 targets for 533 yards and a touchdown. He is unlikely to command a salary of $16 million per season. However, McCaffrey raising the bar could have a trickle-down effect.

“Shoutout to Christian, man, that’s my boy,” Kamara said, grinning with delight.

This could also mean good things for Saquon Barkley. The 23-year-old Giants star, whom general manager Dave Gettleman describes as “touched by the hand of God,” is just a year behind McCaffrey and will be in the hunt for an even bigger contract come 2021.

Doling out massive running back contracts has been a divisive topic within the football community. Former Ram Todd Gurley won the NFL’s Offensive Player of the Year award in 2017 and subsequently signed a four-year, $60 million contract with $45 million guaranteed in July 2018. The polarizing deal made him the highest-paid running back at the time.

The former Georgia Bulldog struggled with a mysterious knee injury towards the end of 2018 and into the postseason and drew criticism when he was seemingly replaced by veteran C.J. Anderson. His role was drastically reduced in 2019, splitting time with Malcolm Brown and rookie Darrell Henderson.

After failed attempts to broker a trade for their 2015 first-rounder, the Rams released Gurley on March 19, absorbing a $13.05 million 2020 dead cap hit. One day later, he signed a one-year, $5.5 million contract with the Falcons.
