Yankees fans won’t be going to stadium ‘for a while,’ de Blasio says
Yankees fans won’t be able to root for the home team anytime soon in the Bronx, Mayor Bill de Blasio said Wednesday.
De Blasio told CNN’s “New Day” that it’ll likely be months before fans are allowed to return to Yankee Stadium.
“I think it’s going to be awhile,” said de Blasio, a diehard Boston Red Sox fan. “I think that’s one of the things later in the trajectory.”
On Tuesday, the mayor said he’s “not confident” that the Big Apple will be able to have large gatherings in June, July or even August.
The Yankees have already missed their scheduled opening day of April 2, when they were supposed to play the Toronto Blue Jays in the Bronx. Major League Baseball officials have floated the idea of putting all 30 teams in the Phoenix area, where they’d play at empty ballparks.
De Blasio predicted the city wouldn’t fully reopen until the fall.
“By September, we are hopeful we could be back to something more like normal,” de Blasio said during a second Wednesday morning TV appearance on “Fox and Friends.”
De Blasio also estimated the Big Apple has already lost between $5 billion and $10 billion in revenue to the coronavirus pandemic.
“There’s no way we’re going to be able to make up that money on our own. That’s where the Congress has to step up,” he said.
