Jay Glazer drew the ire of Twitter after failing to deliver news the Internet deemed unworthy of him teasing a day in advance. The troll-happy Twitter universe won’t be thrilled with the Fox Sports insider’s legitimate reasoning for holding the underwhelming news that backup Rams center Brian Allen was the first NFL player with a confirmed case of COVID-19.
“I work for FOX. I don’t work for Twitter,” Glazer said on the Rich Eisen Show. “If I could save something for ‘FOX NFL Sunday’ or a show I’m gonna do, that’s my job. That’s what I’m gonna do.”
Had the news been more substantive, Glazer likely would have faced minimal backlash. Still, Glazer claims it wasn’t his idea to tease the information so far in advance, blaming FOX Sports Radio’s Jason Smith for tweeting his quote — “I am breaking big, big news tomorrow night on Fox Football Now. I mean big, national news tomorrow. I’m not kidding around.” — out of context.
“They just took that part and put it out there. I wake up in the morning, literally 200 texts, all 32 teams, owners, players, ex-players, coaches, wives, what’s your big news? What’s your big news?” Glazer said. “People are calling, ‘What’s the news? What’s the news?’ I’m like, ‘Nothing like you guys are thinking. … I even tweeted out, it’s not what you think. It’s not a trade or a player signing somewhere and it just got ignored.”
Glazer said he couldn’t reveal the information sooner since he’d already filmed a segment with Allen about his positive test for the novel coronavirus,
“We filmed the show the day before. I talked to Brian Allen about it and he agreed to do this for me for a show. That’s what we talked about. Not me tweeting out his news,” Glazer said. “Brian was good with that. I can’t put it out there. He and I agreed.
“I wish that original tweet didn’t go out. … I apologize about that tweet being sent out that I was gonna have big news, but I was trying to get people to understand the seriousness of it and that’s when it took on a life of its own.”
