A Michigan county has been scouting ice rinks to use as makeshift morgues in the case it gets overwhelmed with coronavirus deaths, according to reports.
The Medical Examiner’s Office in Oakland County — which covers part of metropolitan Detroit — confirmed to Fox 2 Detroit that it was considering rinks as a “last option.”
“That would mean all the refrigeration trucks are full, we could no longer utilize those, then we would be forced to that ice rink,” administrator Casimir Miarka told the station.
“Depending on the storage capacity, that would be our last resort,” Miarka said, insisting the contagion was “going to impact everybody.”
Oakland County has more than 5,500 confirmed COVID-19 cases as of Thursday afternoon, according to Johns Hopkins University data.
