Ex-Los Angeles Rams players Todd Gurley and Clay Matthews aired their grievance last week on Twitter demanding that their former employer cough up guaranteed money that is still owed them.
The Rams addressed the situation with general manager Les Snead telling NFL Network that Gurley and Matthews will get the money very soon.
“Here’s what I do know. They’re definitely owed money. That money is guaranteed. We’re going to pay them,” Snead said. “There’s some language in the contract of exactly when you pay them, and that’s what we’re adhering by. What I do know is both Clay and Todd earned that money and they’re going to get that money.”
Gurley, who was released by the Rams in March after five seasons due to knee issues, tweeted on April 8 “@RamsNFL past due. Send me money ASAP.” The Rams released Gurley only two years after signing him to a four-year $60 million extension along with $45 million in guarantees.
The language the Rams referring to concerning Gurley has to do with conditions set by his release, which was designated for after June 1. It allows the Rams to spread almost $11.75 million of dead-money cap charges over two years and save almost $5.5 million in cap room. Gurley is still owed a $7.55 million roster bonus by the Rams.
The running back did sign a one-year $5.5 million deal with the Atlanta Falcons and had claimed in a radio interview that former Falcon and Hall-of-Famer Deion Sanders wasn’t keen on the idea of Gurley wearing his No. 21. Sanders later tweeted he was only joking with Gurley.
Matthews had retweeted Gurley adding “You and me both TG!,” with a mad emoji, and added. “Better get some interest with that too.” He was released after playing only one season of a two-year deal with the Rams and recording eight sacks in 13 games.
The 33-year old outside linebacker was due a fully guaranteed $2 million roster bonus, according to ESPN, but the deal also has offset language for $2 million. Matthews is still a free agent.
