Tom Brady better with Buccaneers than Patriots are without him: Vegas

The debate has raged for years, an answer forever elusive: Was Tom Brady or Bill Belichick more important to the Patriots dynasty?

Well, Vegas has rendered a verdict.

Even though the Buccaneers haven’t made the playoffs since 2007 and the Patriots have won 11 straight division titles, Caesars Sportsbook believes Brady’s new team is more likely to finish with a better record this season.

Caesars set the Patriots win total at 8.5 — the team’s lowest predicted win total since 2003 — behind the AFC East favorite Bills, who have a win total of 9. Tampa Bay also opened with a win total of 9 and is a -155 favorite to make the postseason.

According to William Hill, the Buccaneers have 16/1 Super Bowl odds, while the Patriots have 20/1 odds.

The Patriots’ last playoff appearance without Brady came in 1999. Belichick’s only playoff appearance as a head coach without Brady came with the Browns in 1994 and his only sub-.500 season in New England came in 2000, the season prior to Brady being named starter.

“I’m very much struggling to find this team being a 10-win team,” Caesars head oddsmaker Jeff Davis told ESPN. “I’m just not buying this team at all. This team will show just how good Belichick and his staff are, compared to some of the other staffs. This might be the year that reality sets in with New England.

“My raw number on the Patriots is less than eight [wins]. Outside of the secondary, which is one of the best in the league, the rest of their roster I think is one of the worst in the NFL.”

The Chiefs and Ravens each opened with the highest win totals at 12, but Kansas City holds the best odds to win the Super Bowl again, at 4-1, according to both sportsbooks. The Jaguars and Redskins shared the lowest win totals at 4.5, per Caesars.
