Who is Joe Burrow? Meet the 2020 NFL Draft’s projected top pick

Is Joe Burrow Bengals-bound?

The former LSU quarterback is expected to be selected first overall by the Cincinnati Bengals in the NFL Draft 2020 on Thursday night, when commissioner Roger Goodell announces the picks from his basement due to the coronavirus pandemic.

While the 23-year-old Burrow has been linked to the Bengals for some time, here’s what else to know about last year’s Heisman Trophy winner.

  • He wants to avoid draft-day drama

During February’s NFL Combine, Burrow made it clear he made it clear he was fine playing for any team that drafted him, unlike another first-overall pick — ahem, Eli Manning — who forced a trade from the Chargers to the Giants in 2004.

“I’m not going to not play,” Burrow said at the time. “I’m a ballplayer. Whoever picks me, I’m going to show up.”

  • He seems to be calling the shots in Cincinnati already

Should Burrow be adding “part-time GM” to his resume, too?

In March, it was reported the Bengals planned to franchise tag seven-time Pro Bowler A.J. Green, Burrow is said to have “made it clear” to the front office he wanted the wide receiver on the team, according to NBC Sports’ Peter King.

Burrow has also called Green “one of the best players at his position.”

  • He’s already got a No. 1 fan

Expect Olivia Holzmacher to be cheering Burrow on the moment he hears his name called by Goodell.

Holzmacher has been linked to Burrow since 2017, his last year at Ohio State before transferring to LSU. She graduated as a Buckeye last year.

Clemson rallied to beat Ohio State in the semifinals, eliminating the potential for any mixed emotions on Holzmacher’s part in the title game. Burrow would lead LSU past Clemson for a national championship.

  • His “tiny hands” are not problematic

At 6-foot-4, Burrow may have the physique of an NFL quarterback, but his hands seemingly sounded alarms at the NFL Combine, measuring nine inches across.

Burrow later joked he was “considering retirement,” with his hands marking the smallest for a first-round quarterback since 2008.

“If it’s a glaring issue on film with turnovers, yeah, it’s probably an issue,” Burrow said at the time. “But I didn’t have a lot of fumbles or anything like that, so I just tried to make a little joke about it.”

  • He’s mingled with OBJ — controversy and all

Perhaps the biggest drama to emerge from this year’s national championship belonged to Odell Beckham Jr.

Following the game, LSU alum Beckham was seen handing cash to receiver Justin Jefferson before they embraced on the field. The move raised eyebrows in regards to the NCAA, which prohibits student-athletes from being paid.

Burrow said the money was real, which the school eventually confirmed.

“I’m not a student-athlete anymore so I can say yeah,” Burrow previously said on Barstool Sports’ “Pardon My Take” podcast.
