George Fant facing Mekhi Becton-sized obstacle to be Jets’ left tackle

George Fant was the first player Jets general manager Joe Douglas signed as part of his offensive line overhaul. When Fant signed in March, it looked like he could be the team’s left tackle.

Things changed in April when the team took massive Mekhi Becton with the No. 11 overall pick. The Jets have not said Becton will definitely play left tackle, but that is where he is expected to end up, which will push Fant to right tackle.

“I will say this, that was my thing leaving Seattle. I wanted to play left tackle,” Fant said on a Zoom call with reporters Thursday. “I’m really comfortable with the position. I think that’s where I offer the best abilities and will be able to help the team the most.”

Fant said he is excited to work with Becton and has watched him play in college. He also sounds like he just wants the opportunity to start the Jets will provide.

“I’m versatile. I can play both sides,” Fant said. “I play the right tackle spot as well. [I did] a pretty good job at that spot as well. Right now I’m just ready for another opportunity to go out there and start and really show the NFL and everybody, and prove to myself as well that I know I can play at a high caliber and really show what I can do.”
