Trump prays for coronavirus victims, health care workers on National Day of Prayer

President Trump on Thursday offered prayers for the victims of the coronavirus pandemic, their families and health care workers during an event at the White House marking the National Day of Prayer, as the nation’s death toll topped 75,000.

“On this National Day of Prayer, America is engaged in a fierce battle against a terrible disease. In times of challenge, our people have always called upon the gift of faith, the power of prayer and the eternal glory of God,” Trump, flanked by first lady Melania Trump, said in the Rose Garden as a group of assembled clergy from various faiths stood by.

“I ask all Americans to join their voices and their hearts in spiritual union as we ask our Lord in heaven for strength and solace, for courage and comfort, for hope and healing, for recovery, and for renewal,” the president continued.

“In recent days and weeks, our country has endured a great hardship. We pray for every family stricken with grief and devastated with loss. We pray for the scientists and researchers pioneering treatments that they find therapies and vaccines and that they find them soon.”

Several clergy members offered their own brief prayers, and the service concluded with a stirring rendition of “God Bless America” performed by Maryland’s Spirit of Faith Christian Center Choir.
