Mets’ Robinson Cano busy working out, giving back in Dominican Republic

Robinson Cano is checking his phone regularly for a message telling him to return to spring training.

The Mets second baseman, in a question-and-answer session distributed Tuesday by the Mets public relations staff, indicated he has been working out daily and is eager for a return to baseball. Spring training was suspended March 12 because of the COVID-19 outbreak.

“I’m just hoping every morning that I might get a text from Luis Rojas or Brodie [Van Wagenen] that says, ‘OK, this is the day that we’re gonna show up in Florida or New York to go back to spring training,’ ” Cano said, referring to the Mets manager and general manager.

“All our guys are getting ready or keep ourselves in shape to come back and be able to play. Hopefully we can come back stronger as a team and win a championship. That’s our goal.”

Cano indicated his daily workouts consist of running and biking for 90 minutes to two hours, in addition to throwing and hitting.

The 37-year-old Cano has also kept busy distributing food and supplies in his native Dominican Republic. Cano indicated he helped organize a drive that filled 4,000 bags with food.

“It is kind of like people not getting jobs here,” Cano said. “With the quarantine we’re all home and a lot of people are not making money in the Dominican. People go out and they make money day by day … a lot of people are hungry.

“We got rice, beans, spaghetti, tuna. We got sugar, salt, milk and salami, which is about 20 pounds. Go out and help people as much as I can.”

Cano said he distributes the food and supplies personally so he can interact with the families.

“The government wants to do this,” Cano said. “And for me, I want to hear from [families]. I don’t want anybody else to come and tell me their excitement and how they feel about it. I like to go myself and experience that.”

Cano indicated he’s been communicating with teammates through group chat and watching “The Last Dance,” the 10-part documentary which chronicles Michael Jordan’s career.
