Cuomo’s sign language interpreter makes coronavirus briefing debut

Viewers of Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s daily coronavirus press briefings were greeted by a new face on Wednesday — his court-mandated sign language interpreter.

Arkady Belozovsky — looking snazzy in a dark suit and tie — signed along with the governor’s briefing in a black box superimposed to the bottom right of Cuomo and his slideshows.

Four deaf New Yorkers sued Cuomo late last month for failing to provide a sign language interpreter to guide them through his daily updates, unlike many politicians including Mayor Bill de Blasio.

Cuomo’s administration unsuccessfully argued that it already provides closed-captioning and real-time language interpretation on its Web site, albeit through a separate portal.

A federal judge on Monday ruled in favor of the plaintiffs, ordering Cuomo to sign up an interpreter to comply with the federal Americans with Disabilities Act.
