Argentinian woman faces jail for throwing ‘riotous’ kids birthday in lockdown
An Argentinian council member faces up to 15 years behind bars for throwing a “riotous” birthday party for her two teens — in which guests threw eggs and flour over each other — during the coronavirus pandemic, according to a new report.
Isabel Mercado, of Mendoza, has quit her job as a Coordinator of Institutional Relations, after allegedly flouting lockdown regulations to hold the birthday bash, The Mirror reported.
In a video of the gathering, no one appears to be wearing a face mask or following social distancing, according to the report.
The party abruptly ended when a neighbor called the cops, according to the report.
Mercado has been charged with spreading a dangerous and contagious disease.
She has apologized “for not respecting the orders,” the outlet reported.
“Because of my children’s 18th and 15th birthdays, we decided to follow tradition and throw eggs and flour, which takes no more than an hour, which is what happened,” she said.
“I did not know what I was thinking of and I take full responsibility for what happened,” she added. “I allowed myself to follow the feelings and love of a mother.”
Her husband, and the owner of the home where the party took place, have also been charged and could face the same sentence, the outlet reported.
The incident remains under investigation.
Argentina has reported 6,879 coronavirus cases and 344 deaths, according to Johns Hopkins University data.
