Jacob deGrom reached untouchable level in second Cy Young season
Jacob deGrom hit another gear in July of the 2019 season.
In five starts, he gave up four runs and registered 46 strikeouts. DeGrom faced 129 batters, gave up a single home run and 21 hits. The dominance extended throughout the remainder of the season, making him the 11th pitcher in history to win back-to-back Cy Young awards.
For the second straight year it was a near-unanimous vote with deGrom receiving 29 of 30 first-place votes.
“Words can’t express it,” deGrom said. “I said it was a dream to win one, but to win back to back, honestly, I’m kind of speechless right now.”
Unlike 2018, when deGrom was a frontrunner for the prestigious pitching award the whole season, it wasn’t the smoothest start to the 2019 season for the 31-year-old. He racked up a 4.85 ERA in April and earned four straight losses.
DeGrom admitted following the tough stretch that he was focusing a bit too much on the idea of improving upon his 2018 Cy Young season. Once he relaxed, though, everything clicked.
By May, deGrom was back at the top of his game and one of the most dominant pitchers in the National League. He posted a 9-5 record with a 2.07 ERA over his final 27 starts of the season.
He posted back-to-back scoreless outings in late July, allowing a combined seven hits in 14 total innings. And to close out the season in September, deGrom finished with 23 consecutive scoreless innings and didn’t give up a single run in his last three starts. He went 3-0 in his final four starts, posting 35 strikeouts, two walks and a 0.32 ERA.
“I think that Jake is, from my vantage point, the best pitcher in baseball,” Mets general manager Brodie Van Wagenen said at the 2019 GM Meetings in Scottsdale, Ariz. “I think that Jake is steady, and he’s consistent with his mindset. I don’t think at any point that I had concern that Jake would be able to rebound [from] a couple of unsteady starts and return to Cy Young form.”
DeGrom received his second straight All-Star nod and earned All-MLB First Team honors in 2019. He also set a new MLB record after allowing three runs or fewer in 30 straight starts.
Following the Mets’ 3-0 victory over the Dodgers in mid-September, Hyun-Jin Ryu, who was the front runner for the NL Cy Young before deGrom ran away with it, had some high praise for his opponent.
“I think every pitcher will tell you the exact same answer: If you have a guy like deGrom going against you, you’re extra focused,” Ryu said through an interpreter after the game.
