Giants’ Darius Slayton backs Jarrett Stidham as Patriots’ Tom Brady successor

Tom Brady’s successor has a believer in the Giants’ locker room.

Darius Slayton, who caught passes from Jarrett Stidham for two seasons at Auburn, believes the Patriots are in good hands with the 23-year-old stepping under center.

“I think people should know that Jarrett is one of the hardest-working football players I’ve ever been around,” Slayton said on SiriusXM NFL Radio, via NESN. “He’s truly a student of the game, and I think that’s why he’s going to have a chance to be a really good quarterback for the Patriots because I know he’s going to put the time in.

“The arm and all that stuff, you know, that’s all God-given. He’s got that already. I think the separator that makes Tom Brady great is putting the time in and having the knowledge, and I think Jarrett is cut from that same kind of cloth.”

Slayton spent 2017 and 2018 in the huddle with Stidham after the quarterback transferred from Baylor. Stidham was drafted in the fourth round in 2019, but spent last fall learning behind Brady while Slayton, a fifth-round pick, made an immediate impact with a breakout rookie season.

Before he was a deep threat for Daniel Jones, Slayton did the same for Stidham, catching 64 passes for 1,313 yards and 10 touchdowns during their two seasons together.

After Brady left for the Buccaneers and the Patriots passed on drafting a quarterback in April, Stidham is expected to have a clear shot at the starting job in New England this fall.
