Funfetti Cereal is coming to turn breakfast into a party

Ever wish you could add a little more fanfare to your morning? Funfetti is on the way to help you turn your bowl of cereal into a sweet celebration.

Pillsbury, the brand that made a confetti-colored confection the quintessential cake of birthday parties, has confirmed rumors that the iconic boxed cake mix will be transformed into a breakfast cereal, hitting shelves this summer.

Rumors swirled late last month after a savvy shopper noticed that Walmart had added the cereal on its website for $3.64 per 17-ounce “family-size” box, though the item is listed as out of stock.

Now, the snack giant and Hometown Food Company, which owns the rights to Pillsbury’s pantry baking products, have confirmed that the nostalgic cereal will hit store shelves in August.

“We tip our baking hats to those who discovered our secret early, and we’re excited to announce that Funfetti cereal is in fact real and coming soon,” said Hometown Food Company CEO Dan Anglemyer in a Friday press release.

He continued, “We are in a period right now where people are finding comfort in trusted brands that bring back wonderful memories.”

The seemingly puffed cereal is speckled with a rainbow of colors and is cake flavored, a la Funfetti cake. No further details in terms of ingredients or nutrition have been provided by the food companies.

“The possibilities of Funfetti are endless,” added Anglemyer, who has previously helped launch Hungry Jack pancake mix, CoffeeMate creamer and Tollhouse edible cookie dough. “This new cereal is a testament to our commitment to discovering innovative ways the Funfetti experience can continue to be a part of special moments both big and small.”

Funfetti Cereal comes at a welcome time during the coronavirus lockdown. Many foodies have been hard at work concocting oddball cereal varieties, including tiny pancake and cookie cereal.
