Burglaries spike in NYC where shuttered businesses are easy targets

Business is booming — for burglars.

Break-ins are up 38% in the Big Apple over the past month, compared to the same period last year, as shops, spas and bars that remain closed because of the coronavirus provide easy pickings.

In one recent heist, a crook broke into a Queens flower shop through a broken window and removed $1,200, an iPad and iPhone early Saturday, cops said.

The thief, who was caught on the store’s video cameras, even stopped to grab a teddy bear at VIP Flowers & Sweets Wedding Center on 108th Street in Forest Hills, police said.

In a second Queens burglary, a spa owner who went back to her business to begin reopening it Sunday discovered a thief had broken in through the roof, cops said. The owner of Spa Bellagio on Roosevelt Avenue told cops the crook ransacked the place and stole $50,000, according to police.

In a third burglary, two crooks were caught on camera in a Manhattan bar.

The owner of District Social Club on West 38th Street in Midtown told cops he received a notification from his security camera company around midnight Saturday and saw two unknown men inside dressed in black with flashlights, cops said.

The men used power tools to cut open a safe and an ATM, only to abscond with $50 and a computer, cops said. The burglars gained entry by cutting through a basement wall.

All of the businesses had been closed for several weeks because of the coronavirus.
