Trump ‘surprised’ by AG Barr’s refusal to probe Obama over Russia case

WASHINGTON — President Trump on Monday said he was “surprised” that Attorney General William Barr poured cold water on a criminal probe into former President Barack Obama — telling reporters, “If it was me, they would do it.”

The president was asked to respond to remarks Barr made earlier Monday where he said a current investigation into the origins of the Russia case would not lead to the scalping of Obama or his former veep Joe Biden and should not become a “tit-for-tat.”

“If it was me, they would do it,” Trump told reporters at the White House of a Department of Justice criminal investigation into his predecessor.

“I’m surprised because Obama knew everything that was happening. I think Obama and Biden knew about it, they were participants, so I’m surprised by that statement. I’m surprised by it,” Trump continued.

Barr issued caution on Monday when asked if a current review into the FBI’s maligned Russia investigation could lead to criminal charges against Obama or Biden, the presumptive Democratic nominee.

“Not every abuse of power, no matter how outrageous, is necessarily a federal crime,” Barr said.

Both Obama and Biden, the presumptive Democratic nominee, have faced increased scrutiny over what role they had in the origins of the FBI’s investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election.

Repeatedly referring to it as “Obamagate,” Trump last week urged the Senate Judiciary Committee to force Obama to testify about the Russia investigation into his 2016 campaign.

Trump promised he would “stay out of it” before telling reporters he had “no doubt” that Obama and Biden were guilty.

“I have no doubt that they were involved in this hoax, this political scandal. As to whether it was criminal, I would think that it was very serious, this take-down of a president. I think it was an illegal take down.

“I wouldn’t have to stay out of it, but I will. I have no doubt they were involved in it. What they’re done to this country with these phony investigations, this Mueller investigation was a waste of time. They should pay a very big price if they were caught.”

The review by US Attorney for Connecticut John Durham is examining the origins of the Russia investigation, and could bring criminal charges, Barr said Monday.

The president also appeared to take a swipe at Obama after he mocked Trump’s coronavirus leadership in a commencement speech, saying, “I don’t think Obama knows where he is, you know, in a lot of ways.”
