Shootings at Indianapolis George Floyd protests leave one dead, two injured
At least one person was killed and two more injured as gunfire broke out among Saturday’s violent George Floyd protests in Indianapolis, police revealed late Saturday.
“We are investigating multiple shootings Downtown,” Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) tweeted early Sunday, stressing that they were “NOT officer-involved incidents.”
“Downtown is not safe at this time. Residents are advised to avoid the area,” the force warned.
The fatality and injuries were revealed just before midnight in a hastily-called late-night press conference by IMPD Police Chief Randal Taylor, according to the Indianapolis Star.
Details were not released about the person killed nor the conditions of those injured in the shootings. It was not clear if they were connected, or victims of separate incidents.
“Enough is enough,” Taylor said, according to the paper, which said sirens blared and fire trucks raced past as he spoke.
“Indianapolis, we are better than this. Downtown is not safe at this time. Residents who do not live in the downtown area, we’re asking to please vacate the area.”
He blamed “a small group of people” who “escalated” the protests to “violent acts, including throwing projectiles at officers and breaking windows of government buildings.
“Unfortunately, there were several people who had no intention to protest,” Deputy Chief Josh Barker said, according to the paper.
“Their intention was to riot. When they culminated in front of the City-County building on Market Street, they made those intentions very well known.”
