Cop bashed in head with fire extinguisher during mayhem in Manhattan
Video shows an NYPD police officer being bashed over the head with a fire extinguisher as he tried to make an arrest during unrest in Manhattan, police said Wednesday.
Cops were struggling with a man they were trying to arrest around 10 p.m. Monday in front of 1284 Broadway in Herald Square when another man came up behind the 25-year-old police officer and brought the red extinguisher down on his head, cops said.
The tough-as-nails cop didn’t appear to flinch but he was left bleeding heavily after the attack, the video shows.
The fire extinguisher wielding man, who was wearing a backpack, can be seen on video running away.
The police officer, who wasn’t identified, needed five stitches and suffered a concussion, cops said.
It was also unclear if any of the males involved in the melee were part of the looting that occurred in Herald Square that night. It was also not immediately clear why officers were trying to arrest the first man.
