WFAN leaves door open for possible Craig Carton return

When Craig Carton is released from prison, a highly coveted job could be waiting for him.

Longtime ally Chris Oliviero, who was hired on May 6 to run WFAN as Entercom New York’s senior vice president and market manager, isn’t ruling out eventually bringing back the disgraced former radio show host, who is serving a 3½-year sentence after being convicted of running a Ponzi scheme to pay off gambling debts. Upon Oliviero’s hiring, The Post reported that Carton, 51, could be given another chance at the station.

“I understand why people would ask that, especially based on our long history,” Oliviero told Newsday on Monday. “But the answer is: Who knows? There are so many variables.

“That said, if a time in the future came where Craig had gotten his life back on track, fulfilled all that was asked of him and was in a position to resume his career, of course we’d talk and discuss.”

Oliviero was a producer for Carton, with the former helping the latter team with Boomer Esiason in 2007. Carton and Esiason’s decade-long run ended after Carton’s arrest in September 2017. He was convicted in November 2018 and began serving his sentence in a minimum-security prison on June 17, 2019.

Oliviero, who was at Carton’s sentencing, believes the 51-year-old would attract multiple bidders in the field despite his legal trouble.

“I think every other radio group would have the same conversation,” Oliviero said. “His talent is well-documented. But he is absolutely not in that position yet, nor do I know when that will be.

“I do think New York believes in second chances in life, so I do think that when that day comes, he will have conversations with people. But I don’t know when that is.”
